Superbug defeated by the Technology of ScentScent Technologies Limited, a small North West company, has developed a natural product that reduces airborne bacteria, including the superbug MRSA, by 90%.Following spectacular results in the laboratory, and live trials within an office environment, a ten month trial within a health care environment where bacterial infections really can mean the difference between life and death- the Burns Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital, was given the green light. Dr. Valerie Edwards-Jones, Manchester Metropolitan University's Assistant Director of Research, together with Dr. Anna Doran, Post-Doctoral Research Associate, took charge of this independent trial, working closely with the staff within the Burns Unit, headed by Consultant, Dr Ken Dunn. Dr Edwards-Jones stated: "The results of our trial at Wythenshawe were tremendous, with bacterial counts in the air reduced by over 90%". The trial monitored general bacterial levels, but also specifically monitored MRSA. Dr Edwards-Jones continued, "The specific MRSA readings were even more impressive, with the product killing the superbug and resulting in no MRSA outbreaks". As a double control, the natural essence blend was removed from the machines for the final two months. During this time, MRSA levels in the air increased, and an MRSA outbreak occurred on the ward. Scent Technologies began this development work in 2004, in collaboration with Micap plc and MMU, and the natural product is subject to a jointly filed patent. Roy Jackson, MD of Scent Technologies is aware that they have created something that has real global potential, "This is an enormous breakthrough in the treatment of life threatening infections". Dr. Edwards-Jones agrees, "This product needs to be in the wards now, playing a vital part in the combat of superbug infections."
