The Scent of Adventure

Would-be holidaymakers and intrepid explorers who call in to West Midlands Co-Op Travel's interactive travel branch, Co-Op Travel Ultra, in Walsall are being invited to quite literally follow their noses as they are treated to an array of holiday scents to help them cast their minds in the direction of foreign shores.

Co-Op Travel has joined with fragrance generator manufacturer, Scent Technologies Ltd. to create an atmosphere of sun, sand and escape in the Walsall branch, providing those who are shopping for a holiday with a taste of things to come.

The state-of-the-art ST Pro machine is installed in the store to pump out various scents reminiscent of those that shoppers might expect to smell on holiday. The most popular scent to be used so far is an essence of coconut, a fragrance designed to transport the recipient of the smell to faraway, palm tree-lined beaches.

Warrington-based Scent Technologies Ltd. developed the ST Pro, which works on the principal of Venturi Airflow and uses essences specially formulated for the machine. Unlike other fragrance generators that work by heating, spraying or vibrating essences, the ST Pro does not use vibration or heat of any kind and therefore will not promote the breeding of bacteria, or produce residue or sedimentation. The machine is able to emit an array of scents within seconds and can also be used to neutralise unpleasant odours quickly and thoroughly.

Debbie Clayton, Managing Director of Scent Technologies Ltd., is delighted that the machine is being used by the travel industry, "There are so many great memories associated with going on holiday along with the promise of good things to come. It's great that the ST Pro can be used to conjure up such positive and happy images. The perfect fantasy for most people is to lie on a tropical beach without a care in the world and it is a well-documented fact that smell is one of our strongest senses. To capture a smell that reflects that dream and expel it into a controlled environment is something that we are extremely pleased to have achieved".

Lynsey Gallimore, Store Manager of Co-Op Travel Ultra, is equally happy with what she sees as a finishing touch to the whole interactive experience: "The general idea was to create a perfect holiday atmosphere which would have an impact on our customers within minutes of entering the store. To trigger their sense of smell was agreed to be the best method of doing that and the staff here have reported a very positive response".

The ST Pro produces pure scent using Venturi Airflow and can be used as a stand alone machine, or as part of a group controlled via DMX 512. It utilises a huge range of specially formulated essences plus any fragrance made to order.
